Estonian Euro Coins

Estonian Euro coins, contrary to what was the choice for many other EU countries feature the same design for all the euro coins, without making any distinction between their nominal amounts.

The design of the Estonian euro coins was decided through a public vote carried in 2004 that chose the idea proposed by Lembit Lõhmus to decorate the Estonian Euros with the shape of the country together with the name of the country (Eesti) and some twelve starts as symbol of the European Union.

The Estonian Euros will starts circulating from the 1st of January 2010, date when the Estonian accession in the Eurozone will be completed and the country will finally adopt as Estonia currency the single European one.

Euro coins in Estonia raised a great criticism during 2010 as many people started to protest against the design of Estonian euro coins asking to change the initial idea and follow EU Member States on assigning different symbols to different coins.

While some people proposed to – at least – insert in one Estonia euro coin the three lions, also a well known symbol of the country, public authorities together with the Bank of Estonia decided not to get back on the issue regarding the layout of Estonia’s Euro coins giving green lights to the production of the Euro coins for Estonia.

The coins will be produced by the Finnish mint and then transferred in Estonia before the date of the changeover – the day when the Estonian Kroons will be finally replaced by the Estonian Euros.
