International Law Institute: Introduction to Legal English

The International Law Institute (ILI) is hosting the 40th annual Orientation in the U.S. Legal System program this summer in Washington DC, USA.

The program is designed to expose foreign attorneys and upcoming LLM students to the American Legal System.

Participants are introduced to the U.S. legal method and process, central U.S. judicial doctrines and the basic research skills needed in the study of U.S. law and for communicating with U.S. colleagues and
clients.

Organizers also included several opportunities to meet lawyers from the private and public sectors and see the practice and administration of law through observations at court.

The three components of the summer program are aimed at improving the participants’ legal skills and understanding of the U.S. judicial system.
The ILI aims then to prepare those who are unfamiliar with American legal practice to do business, interact with U.S. attorneys, and study law in the United States.

The two different modules of the program are “Legal English and Legal Writing” taking place between JULY 5 -16, 2010 and “Orientation in the U.S. Legal System” between JULY 10 – August 6, 2010.

The International Law Institute will offer a limited number of tuition scholarships for the Orientation and Legal English & Writing programs.
To apply, write a short letter of 1-3 pages explaining how you believe the [specify the course] will help you and how a full or partial tuition scholarship will enable you to attend.

You may supplement your letter with one or two letters of recommendation from faculty members or employers.
