People Wants Ilves (His Tie and His Wife) To Stay

Toomas Hendrik Ilves did good as a President therefore deserves a re-election; this is the verdict that came out from a recent poll organized by the Estonian daily Postimees.

The picture that came out of the one thousands interviews realized during the month of January is clear and shows how Estonians would not mind being able to vote for the elections of the Presidency of the Republic for declaring their appreciation to the current Estonian President.

Getting the support of 29% of the respondents, Ilves came first followed by the evergreen major of Tallinn Edgar Savisaar seen as a suitable President by the 17% and the former prime minister and now member of the European Parliament Indrek Tarand who, after the small revolution that gained him a seat between Strasbourg and Brussels during the last European elections, have seen his name awarded by 9% of the preferences.

7% of the respondents also voted for the current speaker of the Estonian Parliament Ene Ergma while the 6% of them would not mind bringing back Siim Kallas from his new role of EU Commissioner on Transports for giving him the keys of Kadriorg residency.

The study that Postimees commissioned to Turu-uuringute AS also asked interviewees to evaluate the work of the different Presidents that headed Estonia during its life and even here Ilves seemed to score a great point.

If the first choice (57%) was Lennart Meri, Toomas Hendrik Ilves (10%) came third right after another great name of the national republican history, Arnold  Rüütel (19%) – a result, this one, that the sociologist Juhan Kivirähk considered highly significant since past is always perceived as being pretty and Meri also set quite a standard for a president.

The survey brought also a somehow funny result when it moved on the question about which were the first thing coming to people’s mind when thinking about the current President Ilves: 26% of the respondents chose to name his bow tie while 10% named his wife Evelin and only 9% mentioned his opinions and speeches
