Estonia and Euro: the Ball Goes to Scicluna
Talks for the Estonian entrance in the Eurozone keep progressing, finally, the European Parliament nominated the Edward Scicluna as rapporteur on the possibility of the country to adopt the single European currency.
63 years old Maltese member of the European Parliament, Sciluna boasts an exceptional curriculum vitae that gained him the title of Euro expert at the European Commission: graduated from the University of Oxford, the University of Malta and the University of Toronto, Edward Scicluna has a world-wide experience in economics that, besides EU institutions, gained him consultancy positions at the UNESCO, the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the governments of Albania, Croatia, Libya and Turkey.
Currently advisor for the International Monetary Fund, Fitch, Standard&Poor’s and Moody’s, the new rapporteur declared: “Having acted as Malta’s euro expert between 2006 and 2009, I know the challenges facing new countries wishing to join the Eurozone, and will put my expertise to good practice.”
Prof. Scicluna work will soon be crucial for the destiny of the sometimes troublesome relation between Estonia and Euro since under the framework of the new treaties governing the functioning of the European Union, it is up to the European Parliament to issue an official approval before any new country can join the Eurozone.
