5.000 People Looking for a Social Job in Tallinn

Over 5.000 people showed up today to the job bourse organized by the city of Tallinn in Lauluvaljak.

While the Estonian Prime Minister enjoyed some rest after the Japanese ski marathon he took part in during his State visit to Japan – no irony here, Õhtuleht reported that the 53 years old Estonian PM finished the 50km Sapporo marathon in 2 hours, 27 minutes and 44 seconds and the fact that this happened while people went to the job bourse seeking for an occupation is just a stupid coincidence almost not worth being mentioned – some five thousand people participated to the event  organized by the city of Tallinn with the purpose of finding the best candidate for the 400 social jobs created for easing unemployment in the Estonian capitol city.

Commenting the event Kairi Teniste, head of the Entrepreneurship Department at the City of Tallinn, explained that even if it was impossible to foresee such a massive participation, the crowd that literally invaded the rooms of Lauluvaljak should finally give a significant excerpt of the labor market in Tallinn.

Teniste noted that while during economic growth periods, jobless people are mostly from risk groups while today, among the people in line looking for an opportunity to find an occupation there were Estonians and Russians, young and old, people with elementary education and people with university degrees.

All this, let us be completely honest, for positions that would not make anyone jump up for joy during normal times since social jobs, in more practical terms, means not very well paid jobs that can include from city space maintenance spheres to attendants and cleaners in public transports.

The bourse will be replied once more during 2010 (authorities declared during autumn) to respect the initial promises made by the city of Tallinn to somehow

So far the city has employed jobless as travel attendants and cleaners in public transport; this time it offered also jobs in the social welfare and city space maintenance spheres offer this year jobs for 2,500 jobless, of whom 1,500 would get social jobs.
