Smuggle diver arrested over Narva River

The Russian border authorities arrested a gang of smugglers whose modus operandi was to use a professional diver to enter illegally cigarettes from Russia to Estonia diving under the waters of Narva River.

“Cigarettes packed in waterproof material were attached to the diver’s suit by rope, and he swam with them to Estonia,” said the FSB – successor of the most famous former Soviet Secret Service named KGB.

Together with the diver, Estonian and Russian border guards also arrested five more people related to the smuggling organization during an operation that took place within the framework of new and increased bilateral cooperation between Estonia and Russia over border issues.
