Speaking at the Government press conference, Estonian Minister of Justice Rein Lang warned about the raise of online crimes and welcomed the decline of more “traditional” violent one.

During his speech, the Minister explained how a clear shift toward cyber crime can be already seen today since: “Other types of crime are decreasing while more and more crimes are committed on the internet,” he said.

Touching the issue of prevention of cyber crimes, Lang noted that the process implies heavy costs since “It requires specialists, hardware and software,” even if he also mentioned the importance for Estonia to invest in this area since the web-based technologies developed in the country could be seriously threatened by cyber criminals in the near future.

To discuss the shift mentioned by the Minister and to measures the trend of the past year we will have to wait until February, when Lang will present to the Riigikoku the annual overview on the implementation of criminal policy guidelines.
