Global Warming – An Useless fear or a real concern?
What is global warming? What is climate change? And how about the Kyoto Protocol – What is all this stuff and why should I be concerned about it?
These times are difficult for the Earth. At least it seems to be like that as everyday in the morning we wake up with lots of news talking about this kind of things; and who knows if we must concern about the issue or it is just a new trend, simply something media can get juice out of until some other topic will be on the rise.
At first sight the whole thing looks serious because it comes from 20 years ago. Yes, it seems not too long but it was in 1988 when James E. Hansen, head of the NADA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and adjunct professor at Columbia University, first warned about global warming and its potential impact and asked to bring the problem in the agenda of Governments.
Now, a while after Kyoto Protocol was signed and in a moment when countries are celebrating another meeting in Copenhagen to discussing new potential solutions to Global Warming, Hansen strongly believes that it would be better if this new meeting would fail.
In an interview for the British The Guardian, Hansen asserted that any agreement that may emerge from new negotiations would be so flawed that we should begin all over again from scratches.
So, taking Hansen statements into account and also seeing the large number of climate change deniers, whom should we believe?
Even if finally during Copenhagen meeting States will manage to reach an agreement to limit greenhouse gases, which with no doubt and yet would be beneficial for our planet, who can ensure us that countries will really make this?
Further than that, a recent report has shown that Europe could decrease its emissions by 40% for 2020 but the cost would be equivalent to a 2% of European GDP (111 billion euro). The same report estimates that they would give between 150 and 450 billion euro to the poor countries per year to achieve the goal of reducing emissions, the same countries in which thousands of people die of hunger every year, and most rich countries do not care about.
And the paradox is behind the corner as, those Nord European countries that never had to care about global warming are the ones that could actually get benefits out if is.
Yes, it might sound strange but according to an EU research project, some northern European countries may benefit from climate change during this century.
According to EU specialists, damages would occur mainly in Southern and Central Europe, while Northern Europe would be the only region to benefit in economic terms.
So, as it seems that the Baltic area should be included in the number of areas that could benefit about from this change, we would like to involve EFP readers on this discussion asking for your opinion: what is for you Climate Change?
