Estonian President Thanks Estonian Cricket Players
Estonian cricket has been growing from strength to strength. Last year Estonia joined the International Cricket Council (ICC), galvanizing the development plans for cricket in Estonia and helping to spread the game.
Part of the Estonian Cricket development plan is to spread the game into the local schools. Recently a cricket coaching session was held at Kernu School, resulting in a resounding success with both the children and teachers. Even the Estonian President wrote to the Estonian Cricket Association to thank them for their efforts!
Winning the Euro T20 competition in Wales last year has really lifted the enthusiasm for the game. Estonia managed to clinch a tense final against the Czech team, beating Welsh, Russian and Croatian sides on the way to the final.
Many of the players have worked hard at improving their game and the win in Wales showed that their hard work had paid off.
The domestic games start soon at the official cricket grounds at the Hippodrome in Tallinn. There are some visiting internationals planned against some teams from the UK, the defense of both the Helsinki 6’s and the Euro T20 titles in Wales.
But perhaps the most exciting development is the inclusion into an ICC Division 5 Cricket Tournament in Corfu this year. If Estonia wins this competition they could be promoted to Division 4 of the ICC and work their way to inclusion in the Cricket World Cup! Following in the footsteps of Afghanistan, who have risen remarkably in the world ranking.
